Dark Side of the Spoon

Gourmet dorm room cuisine.

Readers of this blog may know that I really like Woodberry Kitchen, a restaurant in Hampden with a focus on local ingredients. I’ve had many great meals at Woodberry Kitchen, but I must say that my most recent visit was less than spectacular.

We started with a pizza that I think had ramp pesto, ricotta, and honey. This was the best dish of the meal for me. Woodberry Kitchen makes great pizza and this didn’t disappoint.

Then my mom and I split a carrot and emmer salad with yogurt dressing. Emmer is a grain similar to farro or barley. The salad had too much parsley in it for my taste.

Alice had the chicken noodle soup. She said it was good so I’ll take her word for it.

I had a baked pasta dish with vegetables for my entree. I figured it would be like a vegetable-laden mac and cheese, and I love mac and cheese, but I really didn’t like it. It was charred all over (including the sides and bottom) and the cheese had a really strong flavor that overpowered the whole dish. It takes a lot for me to not like mac and cheese, and I was sad that it wasn’t what I had expected.

My mom had fish. I can’t remember what kind of fish it was, but I do remember the waiter saying it feeds on crustaceans so the flesh is very sweet. I’m fairly sure she enjoyed it.

Alice had the clams with spelt noodles. I also think she liked her entree, so maybe I was the only one who wasn’t a fan of their dinner.

I’m not writing Woodberry Kitchen off for one meal that I didn’t particularly enjoy. I still really like the restaurant, and I hope that next time I go they redeem themselves with a spectacular meal like the ones I’m used to!
